Lifting the Tripod
8. HAVE HELPERS BLOCK THE ENDS OF THE TRIPOD POLES TO PREVENT SLIDING as you lift the north and south poles and walk under them from tip to butt, raising the tripod as you go. If you have no helpers, drive stakes to capture the butts of the poles and prevent sliding. Someone can also help you by pulling on the anchor rope, but this is not essential and sometimes causes problems if your helper pulls too far. When the tripod reaches the balance point (vertical angle) swing the butt of the north pole out and away and back to point 'N'. While doing this, watch the tie point and be certain that the lashing does not slip from its original position. If any of the poles slip through the lashing, you must lower the tripod and re-tie the anchor rope to the poles with the marks properly aligned. If you drive stakes to prevent the butts of the poles from sliding, drive one stake against the end of the butt and one stake on each side. The stake holding the outside of the north pole should be near enough to the end to allow the butt of this pole to be lifted away and carried to its final position (point 'N') after the tripod reaches a vertical angle.
