Smoke Flap and Medicine Poles
22. INSERT THE ENDS OF THE SMOKE FLAP POLES INTO THE SMOKE POLE POCKETS and extend the smoke flaps to the position desired.

23. PLACE THE MEDICINE POLE about 6 to 8 feet out in front of the door and loop the smoke flap ropes around it. The ends of the smoke flap ropes should be secured to a peg (or two pegs, if desired) two or three feet further out. The tension on the ropes keeps the medicine pole in place. This is illustrated on the front cover of this book. If you do not have (or chose not to use) a medicine pole, the ends of the smoke flap ropes can be pulled down to one of the pegs at one side of the tipi. Both ropes can be tied together on one side to overlap the bottoms of the smoke flaps or one can be tied on each side of the tipi to open the smoke flaps wide. When storms are anticipated, the bottoms should be overlapped.
